Lumineers Q & A

by Aaron P. Diehl, DDS

What are lumineers?

Lumineers are similar to veneers in that they help to cover up imperfections on the surface of the teeth or even out a misaligned smile. They are generally made from thin porcelain material and are approximately 0.2 mm thick.

Lumineers are custom-made to match the color and texture of your regular teeth.

What dental problems can lumineers fix?

Lumineers can address a wide range of common cosmetic dental concerns, including:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Stains or discolorations
  • Spacing issues and gaps
  • Slight crowding
  • Small teeth

Some patients also opt for lumineers to fix minor issues that would normally require braces.

Lumineers are usually recommended for patients who have minor spacing issues or tooth rotations. They may not be able to fix more complicated problems.

What is the process like for getting lumineers?

You generally must be in good health and have no signs of periodontal disease to qualify for lumineers.

If Dr. Diehl determines you’re a good candidate for lumineers, you’ll schedule an appointment to take impressions of your teeth so your lumineers can be made. Dr. Diehl might also need to slightly buff or reshape your teeth so the lumineers fit correctly.

Once your lumineers are ready, Dr. Diehl can apply them to your teeth during a second appointment. The process is not painful and doesn’t require any sort of anesthesia. You can generally return to your normal eating and drinking habits right away.

What are the benefits of lumineers?

Unlike traditional veneers, lumineers don’t generally require extensive tooth reshaping or grinding — a process that often causes patients anxiety and discomfort. Besides their thin, natural-looking appearance, lumineers are:

  • More resistant to cracking and leakage than regular veneers
  • Last just as long — or longer than — veneers
  • Painless and quick to apply

With almost no recovery time needed, lumineers can quickly transform your smile and cover up any imperfections. If you’re interested in other cosmetic dentistry procedures in addition to lumineers, Dr. Diehl can recommend the best services for your goals.
